The American Institute of Architects (AIA) is an international, US-founded professional organization, that protects and serves architects and design professionals, monitors legislative issues that impact the public and the profession, to recognize and promotes excellence in architectural design, technology, and design-related issues.
Full members of the AIA are individuals who are licensed to practice architecture in the US and are invited to be a part of the leading organization representing the interests of their profession. Membership is also open to allied professionals and students to form part of the larger design and construction community. The members of AIA create a community to share knowledge and advocate a shared vision to have a positive impact on the direction of the profession, the shape of our neighbourhoods, and our world.
The American Institute of Architects is the voice of the architectural profession in the US and the resource for its members in service to society. Through a culture of innovation, AIA empowers its members and inspires the creation of a better-built environment. The very first mission statement of AIA, dating from 1857, states the goal to "promote the scientific and practical perfection of its members" and "elevate the standing of the profession." In 1858 the constitution was amended, enlarging the mission "to promote the artistic, scientific, and practical profession of its members; to facilitate their intercourse and good fellowship; to elevate the standing of the profession; and to combine the efforts of those engaged in the practice of Architecture, for the general advancement of the Art." While these precepts continue to be refined through the years, the basic objectives of the AIA as a professional organization have remained the same. They continue to guide AIA chapters worldwide.

AIA SHANGHAI

AIA Shanghai, an entity of the American Institute of Architects, was organized in 2012 to serve the professional interests of the growing number of AIA member architects practicing in Shanghai and other cities in the People’s Republic of China. The chapter enables the AIA to better meet the needs of its members in the region, and to uphold the professional tenets first outlined 150 years ago by the AIA’s founders in the United States.
AIA Shanghai extends the services of the AIA to its members practicing in Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China (PRC), to uphold a high standard of design, education and professional practice among its members. Equally as important, AIA Shanghai helps foster stronger ties between AIA, regional architects and governments in the PRC. It provides a conduit for communication and support from AIA, American associates, and fellow overseas members, as well as offers a means for local recognition of credentials and professional experience.
AIA Shanghai organizes US-trained architects and other interested design professionals who are active in Shanghai, and who have professional ties to the United States. AIA Shanghai seeks to foster an understanding of the differences in professional practices between the US and the PRC; promote US training and design approaches; facilitate international recognition of US professional architectural credentials; and foster communications between AIA and its members who work and reside in the PRC.
美国建筑师(AIA)上海分会成立于2012年，旨在更好的服务在上海和中国其他城市执业的美国建筑师协会(AIA)会员。上海分会能够更好地满足其在该地区的成员需求，并秉持与践行协会150年前在美国创办的宗旨原则。
美国建筑师协会(AIA)上海分会将AIA的服务延伸至其在中华人民共和国（中国）上海执业的会员，倡议其会员维持高标准的设计、教育和专业实践。同时，美国建筑师协会(AIA)上海分会有助于促进AIA、本地建筑师和政府部门间更紧密的联系。美国建筑师协会(AIA)为美国与其他海外会员提供了沟通和支持的渠道，并提供了在地职业认可和专业经验的认证。
